What Is a Charitable Gift Annuity?

A charitable gift annuity is a giving option that allows you to make an irrevocable gift to a nonprofit you believe in while also securing dependable income for the future. When you establish a CGA, part of your contribution supports the long-term mission of the organization, and part is returned to you through fixed, guaranteed payments for the rest of your life. These payments never fluctuate, providing a stable source of income you can rely on throughout retirement.

You may choose to receive the income yourself or name another person as the beneficiary, making a CGA a meaningful way to provide for loved ones while advancing work that reflects your values. Because the gift is permanent and immediately supports the charity’s mission, a CGA offers both personal financial benefits and lasting community impact.

Ways to Fund a Charitable Gift Annuity

  • Instead of selling your stock and donating the cash, you can fund a CGA directly with appreciated shares. This may allow you to bypass a portion of capital gains tax associated with the charitable portion of your gift.

  • ndividuals age 70½ or older can use up to $54,000 from a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to create one or more CGAs. This amount counts toward the annual QCD limit of $108,000 and can only be used once in your lifetime, within a single calendar year.

*Project H.O.O.D. encourages you to consult a tax professional to understand how these options apply to your specific financial situation.
