Children Lose More Than 25% of School Year Learning During Summer
According to a 2018 article in the Economist, summer vacation without structured learning and activities, children can lose a quarter of the gains they made during the school year.
The impact varies by socioeconomic class and even widens the achievement gap. Quote from article: “Summer is the most unequal time of the year,” says Matthew Boulay of the National Summer Learning Association, an American NGO. Well-off parents can fill the gap left by school, keeping their children stimulated with summer camps, trips abroad or private tuition (see article). Poorer families, obviously, find this harder. Demand for subsidised “enrichment” activities often outstrips supply. Mr Boulay recalls meeting a mother in Oregon who queued for four hours to enroll for free swimming lessons for her son.
Project H.O.O.D. has a number of initiatives to combat this summer learning loss.
Free Summer Camp: Our free summer camp for children ages 6 - 13 provides a safe, fun experience full of school lessons such as, a reading challenge, library books, chess and physical activities. The children enjoy free breakfast, lunch and a snack in a structured environment.
U-Turn Boot Camp: Boot Camp is a rigorous program for boys ages 6 - 14 who are struggling in school and have behavioral issues. In addition to physical military training and mentoring, the boys are tutored in reading, comprehension, math and writing.
Project H.O.O.D. Films: HOOD Films will teach students several aspects of film production such as, filming, producing, editing, and dialogue. Students develop decision-making abilities, discernment, creativity, analyzing abilities, and team-building.
